As the Burlington waterfront glows with the magic of the Festival of Lights, it’s worth remembering that behind every twinkling bulb and joyful display is something even more powerful — people who care deeply about their community. Service clubs like the Burlington Lions Club are the heart of that spirit. They’re made up of ordinary residents who dedicate their time, energy, and compassion to making Burlington a brighter, kinder place to live.
Service clubs have always been about more than just fundraising or volunteering. They are where community happens — where friendships form, ideas grow, and people come together with a shared purpose: to help others. In an age when many feel disconnected or too busy, the role of these clubs is more important than ever. They offer belonging, meaning, and the chance to contribute to something lasting. When you walk through Spencer Smith Park and see the Festival of Lights in full glow, what you’re really seeing is the power of that service — neighbours working together to bring joy to thousands.

The Burlington Lions Club has been a cornerstone of this community spirit for nearly a century. Since 1925, the club has been serving Burlington through countless initiatives that support families, seniors, youth programs, vision and health causes, and local charities. Their motto, “We Serve,” says it all. The Lions are behind some of Burlington’s most beloved community traditions — including the Festival of Lights. Each year, their members dedicate countless volunteer hours to bringing the festival to life: installing and maintaining displays, coordinating volunteers, and ensuring the event remains free and accessible to everyone. Without their dedication, the Festival simply wouldn’t be what it is today.
But like many volunteer organizations, the Burlington Lions Club needs new members to keep these traditions alive. Joining a service club isn’t just about giving back — it’s about gaining something too. Members often say they’ve found lifelong friendships, leadership skills, and a deeper sense of purpose. It’s a way to stay connected, to get involved in meaningful projects, and to help shape the future of our city. For families, it’s a way to show children the value of community service; for newcomers, it’s a welcoming door into local life; and for long-time residents, it’s a chance to make a lasting impact.
The Festival of Lights is entering its 30th year, a testament to what community collaboration can achieve. Every evening from late November through January, the waterfront transforms into a winter wonderland, drawing thousands of visitors from across the region. It’s a celebration of light, joy, and togetherness , all powered by volunteers who simply care enough to show up. But this kind of magic doesn’t happen on its own. It depends on people willing to lend a hand, share an idea, or give a few hours of their time.
If you’ve ever felt inspired by the beauty of the Festival or wanted to play a part in something that brings people together, consider joining the Burlington Lions Club. You don’t need special skills or decades of experience , just a willingness to help and a heart for community. Together, we can keep Burlington’s traditions glowing bright — not just through the Festival of Lights, but through the spirit of service that fuels it. Every volunteer, every hour, and every act of kindness helps ensure that our community continues to shine, year after year.
